The task I was looking forward to the least before going on mission was fundraising.
It felt awkward. Really humiliating.
But over time my perspective changed.
Fundraising isn’t really about asking people for money.
It’s about inviting people to go on mission with you.
Not everyone are in a place to leave their family and job, pack up their life, and go on mission. But many people still want to be part of what God is doing. Supporting the mission financially becomes a way of joining the missionary although not physically.
For the two years, we budgeted $22,000 to cover living and travel expenses
of which, I was responsible for raising $11,000, while the other $11,000 was supported by JY US.
The number is surprisingly low and a big reason for that is the incredible generosity of the JY community around the world, the JY mission infrastructure and the local priests/religious who helped with housing and amenities.
So I prayerfully made a list of people to reach out to, printed flyers, and started contacting people.
Two weeks later, after all that effort…
I had raised $175.
What. A. Flop.
At that moment, reaching $11,000 felt about as realistic as climbing Mount Everest in flip-flops.
But this was the first big moment where I had to grow in something deeper than fundraising skills.
Trust.
If God was the one calling me to go on mission, then funding the mission was His responsibility too...
Another thought that gave me peace was realizing that God already knew—long before I ever started sending messages—who would support this mission. He already had arranged the people who would partner in it.
My job wasn’t to control the outcome.
My job was simply to be faithful and do my part.
So I had to surrender with a prayer:
“I’ll do my part, lay down my pride… and let You figure out the rest.”
And slowly, little by little, support started to come in.
Individuals...
Families...
Unexpected generosity...
By November 2024, the $11,000 had been raised.
And God didn’t stop there.
A former FOCUS missionary encouraged me:
“The Lord cannot be outdone in generosity.”
By January 2026, over $22,000 had been received toward this mission.
This was the first of many experiences that taught me on what it means to grow in trusting God
