Hi Friends!
Thank you all who interceded through Holy Mass and prayers from my last email. Those who were ill are all now recovered and well.
Happy November! I have been in Uganda since Oct 1, at the Lira Diocese's youth center which Bishop Sanctus Linok entrusted to Jesus Youth. This center now has been converted to a perpetual adoration center, with mission outreach to nearby schools, parishes, and youth. The center is currently run by JY Uganda staff, and 2 International JY Full-Timers with whom I've trained with in Sri Lanka. There are four other young adults from JY Tanzania here on mission exposure as well.
Here is an update of my time in Kerala, India, the birthplace of the Jesus Youth movement in the 1980s. It was initially planned as a 6-week internship with the 4th Wave Foundation. The Lord had other plans as well and my time in Kerala was painted with a variety of unplanned colorful experiences and new found relationships. I've included the story through pictures here
After landing in Kochi, India after the one month FT training in Sri Lanka, I hit the ground running at the 4th Wave Foundation the very next day. From day one, the internship provided vast learning experience in the field of prevention science. Fourth Wave Foundation, is an NGO that is focussed on creating socially responsive, self-reliant communities which creates safe, substance free environments, for children. Over the years it has received multiple recognitions including the Zero Project Award at the United Nations Office in Vienna, Austria and Special Consultative status by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.
I was involved in facilitating team-building activities, and shadowing the Student Empowerment Program which focuses on addiction awareness and student empowerment. I researched cultural impacts on laws protecting minors, case studies regarding substance use prevention methods around the world, and parenting strategies for youth development. I also assisted with data management and creating promotional materials.
I had the privilege of participating in the "Training of Trainers" (ToT) organized by the Drug Advisory Program of the Colombo Plan. It was a unique opportunity to connect with professionals from 10 countries in Asia and Africa, exchanging insights and experiences in the field. This training not only enhanced my understanding of prevention science but also provided me with practical skills to engage youth in substance use prevention.
The ToT prepared me for the 11th Asian Youth Forum on Drug use Prevention. This forum brought together 150 young leaders from 12 countries, empowering them to design initiatives that foster substance-free environments within their communities. I was fortunate to serve as a Youth Leader, facilitating a dynamic group of 12 young women from rival colleges. Together, we engaged in meaningful discussions, collaborated on project ideas, and shared plenty of lighthearted banter along the way. It was an inspiring experience that highlighted the power of youth-driven action in creating positive change.
My time with 4th Wave was an eye-opening experience that broadened my understanding of the non-profit sector as well as preparing me for my eventual mission placement in the First Nation indigenous communities in the northern territories of Canada. It was a period of growth, learning, and invaluable networking with people around the globe including many influential leaders in this sector; in government agencies, nonprofits, universities, rehabilitation centers etc. I am deeply grateful to Diana and CC Joseph for giving me the opportunity and for their guidance throughout my journey.
I was fortunate to volunteer at the Kerala Campus Conference, a four-day gathering that brought campus leaders together to reignite their passion for evangelization. It was an incredibly rewarding experience, filled with meaningful conversations and the opportunity to connect with so many inspiring individuals. The accommodations, reminiscent of World Youth Day, involved sleeping on classroom floors—but the memories created in those humble spaces with the other participants and volunteers are unforgettable. With over 900 students in attendance, the conference made a significant impact, even making it into Vatican News. You can read more about it here. Shout out to many JY leaders, Anu and Shelton Pinhero, Manoj Sunny, George Joseph, Don Benny, and Ditto for connecting me to this opportunity.
I am deeply grateful for the warmth and generosity of the JY family, Jomy, Roma, and Maria, who welcomed me into their home and allowed me to raid their fridge for six weeks. Our time together was filled with lively and insightful conversations about life and ministry. Residing at the JY Villa, a private community where everyone shares the JY spirit, helped me connect with many pioneers and senior leaders of JY and movement life. I was also able to attend ‘Connect’, a weekly prayer gathering that offers specialized tracks for family, youth and children.
It was a pleasant surprise and joy to meet with friends from the USA to India, some of whom are receiving this email. With my parents' roots in Kerala, it was heartwarming to spend a few days with my extended family after being two years apart. The whole experience was a beautiful mix of community, learning, and hard work.
That’s it for now, till next time.
With Love,
Josh
